BlackBerry to launch Android-powered Priv smartphone on Jan 28

NEW DELHI: BlackBerry, the Canadian enterprise solution provider and smartphone maker, will launch its Android-powered handset, Priv, on January 28, 2016 in India.

The smartphone was originally launched in November last year in US at $699.00 for an unlocked version.

The smartphone is the first ever Android OS powered by BlackBerry, which has been using its own BlackBerry OSesBB7 and BB10. The Priv phone however is secured by Blackberry 10 Enterprise.

The Android 5.1.1 run BlackBerry Priv comes with a 5.4-inch QHD display. It is powered by a hexa-core (1.8GHz dual core + 1.44GHz quad core) Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC alongside 3GB of RAM.

The BlackBerry Priv features 32GB internal storage, which is expandable up to 2TB via a microSD card – and is powered by a massive 3410mAh battery. It features an 18-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front shooter.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen recently has said that company may launch two new Android phones in 2016, but that the possibilities rest on the success of the Priv smartphone. While asked about future BlackBerry phones running on Android, Chen told CNET, “so far, so good. I’m taking a cautiously optimistic view.”
